Understanding Life Insurance Beneficiaries: How to Choose and When to Update

What Is a Beneficiary?

A beneficiary is the person, people, or entity you name to receive your life insurance death benefit. Choosing beneficiaries carefully, and keeping the designation current, is one of the most important parts of owning a policy.

Primary vs. Contingent Beneficiaries

A primary beneficiary is first in line to receive the benefit. A contingent (or secondary) beneficiary receives it only if the primary beneficiary is unable to โ€” for example, if they've passed away before you.

Common Beneficiary Choices

Many people name a spouse, partner, or children as beneficiaries. Others name a trust, especially when beneficiaries are minors, or a charitable organization. Each option carries different implications worth understanding before you decide.

When to Update Your Beneficiaries

Life changes โ€” marriage, divorce, a new child, or the death of a named beneficiary โ€” are all good reasons to review your designation. Beneficiary forms are usually simple to update directly with your carrier.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Two frequent issues: naming a minor directly without a trust or guardian arrangement in place, and forgetting to update beneficiaries after a major life change like divorce. Both are worth reviewing with your policy documents in hand.
